Huawei opens global ICT centre in Malaysia

China’s Huawei, a leading global information, communications and technology (ICT) solutions provider, has officially opened the company's first global ICT training centre in Malaysia, its first outside China.

The Malaysia Global Training Centre (MGTC), which was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in Cyberjaya, yesterday, is expected to further cement Malaysia-China bilateral ties.

Also present were China’s ambassador to Malaysia, Chai Xi; Malaysia’s special envoy to China, Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting and Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Datuk Fadillah Yusof.
In welcoming Huawei’s investment in Malaysia, Datuk Seri Najib said it was an honour that the company chose to set up the centre in Malaysia from among 140 counties that Huawei has operations, an indication of its confidence in the future of Malaysia and the region.

Huawei has invested close to 90 million to set up the centre and bring in new equipment from 2010 and plans to invest not less than RM90 million over the next two to three years to expand its business and services in Malaysia, Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd Deputy Managing Director for Product Solutions and Marketing, Foo Fang Yong said, adding that the company would continue to bring in updated technologies and equipment.

The MGTC covering an area of 30,000 sq ft in Quill 3 building in Cyberjaya has modern facilities and equipment from Huawei's product lines, including its latest 4G/LTE mobile network technology. Plans are also in the pipeline for the company to invest in distant-learning facilities.

The centre is focused on offering the latest ICT technology training to Malaysian ICT workers as well as its customers from the Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Africa and South America.
The MGTC which now has over 50 Malaysian trainers, plans to gradually increase the number to 150 trainers by 2015, Foo said.

In line with the opening of the centre, the company inked an agreement with 10 local universities to set up 10 Huawei University training labs under the MSC Malaysia MyUniAlliance (Huawei) programme in each of the universities to generate greater interest among students in the field of next-generation ICT technologies.

Huawei Senior Vice-President, Victor Wang said the main objective of the initiative was to train and develop 10,000 Malaysian ICT professionals by 2016.
